Yeast Vs. Butter Roll

Yeast Vs. Butter Roll

We luckily live in a world today where you can find a recipe for just about anything online! But, that also means that there has become a lost art of family recipes that get passed down from generation to generation. One recipe that you won’t find anywhere except for your grandmother’s recipe box is the Southern Butter Rolls. Ok, so like dinner rolls, right? Not quite, more like a simple and delicious twist on cinnamon rolls and sticky buns.

The original history of the Southern Butter Rolls isn’t well known. They originate in some area of Memphis from many years ago. Back when our great, great-grandmothers couldn’t fathom wasting an inch of anything. They would take biscuit dough, usually leftover, roll it thin, and spread a mixture of butter, cinnamon, and sugar on top. Cut it up, place it in the oven for a while, and voila! Southern Butter Rolls. For our baking amateurs, you may ask, what’s the difference between that and a regular cinnamon roll or sticky bun? Normally, in all the recipes you’ll find on Pinterest, you will use a yeast-raised dough to create your sweet rolls instead of biscuit dough. The difference is the added level of flaky, buttery goodness, and simplicity.

Not all Southern Butter Rolls are created equally, as well. Many recipes differ from family to family, some making it a little bit different than the next. At Mason Dixie, we’ve captured that southern comfort and love in our Cinnamon Rolls and Sticky Buns. Both are baked with real ingredients, just like your great-grandmother used, and filled with happiness!
